Midget AA Crushers extend undefeated streak
The Pictou County Midget AA Crushers have extended their undefeated streak to 19 games as they head into the final stretch of the season before hosting the 2012 Midget AA Provincial Championship.
The Crushers have not lost a game since a 32 defeat at the hands of the Bedford Blues at the Moncton Kent Challenge Cup on Dec. 3. Since that time the Crushers have gone 1801, including a Championship victory at the KFC Christmas Tourney in Truro.
This past weekend Pictou County squared off against the Western Valley Spartans in a home and home series that saw them defeat the Wildcats by identical scores of 74 in both games.
On Saturday the Crushers hosted Western Valley at the Hector Arena and despite falling behind by 42 early, the Crushers rallied behind the offensive outburst by Tom Hayman in scoring five unanswered goals in the 74 win. Hayman was in on every goal the Crushers scored, including a natural hat trick in the middle frame and added an assist on each of other four Crusher goals. Luke Grant added a single and three assists while Geoff Arbuckle scored a pair of goals. Noah Chisholm rounded the scoring with a single and two helpers. Brandon Bell chipped in with an assist. Sash Murphy got the win in nets. Murphy was called up from the Thorburn Midget B squad after both regular net minders were forced out of the line up with flu like symptoms.
The Crushers headed to Bridgetown on Sunday for the return match and with a short bench rallied for another 74 win. It was Arbuckle who had the hot hand on Sunday, scoring four times and adding an assist. Linemate Evan MacDonald helped out with four assists. Hayman added a pair of goals and an assist while Grant had a single marker. Brett Rodgers had two assists as did Jacob MacDonald. Riley Brown, nike free, Luke MacDonald and Chisholm had one assist each. It was a chippy affair that saw a number of penalties assessed, including two fighting majors that resulted in the ejection of two Pictou County players. Goaltender James Smith returned to the line up and was solid in getting the win for the Crushers.
"It was nice to finally see how we match up against Western Valley. They've been having a strong season this year and this was the first opportunity we've had to play them", said Coach Barry Hayman. "They've got some good speed up the middle and I expect them to be strong in the final four match up out of the South Conference."
The Midget Crushers will play host to this years final five at the 2012 Provincial in Trenton March 23rd to 25th. Bedford, TASA, Western Valley and Shelburne will playoff early in March and the top three teams from that tournament will head to Trenton representing the South Conference. Truro and Antigonish will meet in a best two out of three series to determine who will join the Crushers to represent the North Conference. The five teams will then square off in a ten game round robin series that will see the top two teams emerge in a gold medal, winner take all, final.
